With the exception of the last year and a half, Leona Mae Myrick Burchfiel lived within 25 miles of her birthplace all of her 92 years. She was the first child of Frank and Vera Myrick born on February 27, 1927 southeast of Jet, OK. She attended Eagle Grove Rural School, and graduated from Gore Consolidated School in 1945. Leona Mae graduated from Enid Business College in 1947.
On April 13, 1947, she married Wilford Burchfiel and they began their married life north of Nash, OK. To this union, four children were born: William, Dollie, Jana and Twyla. Leona spent most of her years as a homemaker and care giver to her children and to her husband who suffered from Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). Wilford passed away in October 1976. Leona spent the following years raising and marrying off her four children. She was devoted to her family, church and community and touched many lives in her journey through life.
She volunteered for and participated in many service organizations. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Nash. When the church decided to have women serve as Deacons, Leona Mae was one of the first three women to serve in that capacity. Leona was active in the Nash CWF, the Nash VFW Ladies Auxiliary (a Charter member and one of the youngest members), and Nash Senior Citizens and Homemakers' Study Club. She served as an officer in most of these organizations. She was also recognized for several years of service (hours) in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in northern Oklahoma.
In May, 2018, Leona's health began to fail and she needed more skilled care so that is when she became a resident of the Attica Long Term Care Center. She met many new people and enjoyed participating in many of the daily activities at the Center when her health allowed. She enjoyed all of the visits by family and friends and received wonderful care by the ALTC staff. On August 31, Leona passed from this world peacefully while surrounded by family.
