Max Eugene Shaffer, 83, of Anthony, passed away August 2, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Max was born February 19, 1936 to Albert and Lola (Funderburk) Shaffer in Clearwater, Kansas. He attended Clearwater school until 1949 when his family moved to Milan, Kansas where he graduated in 1954.
After high school, Max enlisted in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged he moved to Colorado where he met Corine Maddox. The couple married in December of 1963. They spent a few years in Colorado before moving back to Milan, Kansas. In 1980, they were blessed with the opportunity to adopt a baby girl, Angela. Max and Corine later divorced after 30 years of marriage.
Max met Kathleen (Rump) Ritter in 1996 at a single's dance. After several months of dances, Max and Kathleen were married in October 1997. They enjoyed 21 years of marriage together.
Max was an avid outdoorsman. If you couldn't find him at home reloading gun supplies, or bench shooting somewhere, he was probably walking a field for birds or sitting in a tree. He loved to pass his knowledge of hunting on to anyone who showed any kind of interest. He also loved a good game of cards and was always ready to be someone's partner.
Max's greatest love was his grandkids, Tristan, Laura Mae and Shauna. He was never too busy to get down on the floor and play a game. He always had an open lap for a book to be read or a good story to be told.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Elvis, and sister, Farol.
Max will be deeply missed by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Angie of Winfield; three grandchildren: Tristan, Laura Mae and Shauna; siblings: Carl Shaffer and wife, Angie of Clearwater, Nelda Newberry of Muskogee, OK, Dale Shaffer and wife, Velma of Springdale, Arkansas, Fern Topham of Wichita, Ed Shaffer of Chautauqua, KS; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Singer Cemetery, northeast of Bluff City. Casket bearers will be Tristan Bissell, Jerry Cox, Mike Cather, Delbert McMillan, Garrett McMillan and Matt McMillan.
