Moette "Brooksie" Smith-Litzenberger 1930 ~ 2019

Moette “Brooksie” Smith-Litzenberger passed away peacefully on November 26, 2019 at the age of 89.

Born to Lester “Shorty” and Ruth Carroll Brooks in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on October 21, 1930, Moette was the fourth of five sisters: Vira Sandquist, Maudell Toms, Cleo Britt, and Shirley Jackson.  She graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1949.  After high school, she attended and graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Wichita, KS.  Moette married Burnie Lee Smith on February 2, 1954.  In 1961 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Burnie began dental school at the University of Nebraska.  As a registered nurse, Moette supported Burnie while he pursued his degree in dentistry.  In 1964 the family moved to Greensburg, Kansas before settling in Harper, Kansas in 1965.  They lived in Harper together until Burnie’s passing on March 4, 1994.  Moette then married LeeLand Litzenberger on December 14, 1996 and were together until Lee’s passing on March 31, 2000.

Moette loved family, enjoyed cooking, quilting, and listening to Burnie’s golf adventures.   She also loved playing cards, especially pitch, and loved fishing with her family.

Preceding her in death are her husband Dr. Burnie Lee Smith, DDS; parents Lester and Ruth Brooks; sisters: Vira Sandquist, Maudell Toms, Shirley Jackson; and second husband Lee Litzenberger.

Surviving family includes her sons: Steven (Della) Smith, David (Shannon) Smith, Philip Smith and Kimberly Neary; daughter Jan (Jake) Robinson-Cordova: her sister Cleo (Dallas) Britt; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  She will be missed by nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside service was 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Harper Cemetery with Pastor David Ersland officiating.
