Janie M. Gates 1950 ~ 2022

Jane Marie (Goertz) Gates, 71, of Anthony, Kansas, passed away on June 27, 2022, after a short battle with colon cancer. Jane, (Janie) was born on July 14th, 1950 to Arthur and Pearl (Kilian) Goertz in Enid, Oklahoma at St. Mary’s Hospital. Janie lived in Medford, Oklahoma with her two brothers Roger and Rodney Goertz.

After losing her father at a young age, her mother, Pearl, remarried Sonny Dunning, and Jane was joined by her younger brother Philip. In 1965 the family moved to Anthony.

In 1968, Janie graduated from Anthony High School as an Anthony Pirate. Janie was on the cheerleading team, elected homecoming queen, and was involved in many other activities. Janie also worked part-time at Jett’s clothing store in Downtown Anthony. After high school, Janie attended Hutch JUCO and Ft. Hays State majoring in Journalism.

Janie married Rex Gates on June 5th, 1970. The couple started their family on the Gates’ Homestead in Anthony. Janie and Rex had two children, Charlotte Marie Gates (Neumeyer) and Jay Austin Gates. Janie loved her life as a full-time stay at home mother, and enjoyed the farming/ranching life. For anyone who knew her, she had a work ethic like no other. She loved gathering cattle on horseback, driving the wheat trucks during harvest, and most of all cooking for anyone who needed a meal. There was always room for one more at her table.

Janie later became a member of the Christian Church in Anthony. There she loved volunteering her time teaching and preparing meals for Youth Groups and attending Bible Studies. Also, she was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. One of Janie’s greatest joys was serving multiple roles at Higher Grounds and Leather Bounds Coffee Shop/Bookstore. She was known as Ms. Janie by the community, and was loved by every child that knew her. Janie will be cherished for her servant’s heart, as she was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Throughout Janie’s years, her greatest joy was attending Jay’s, Charlotte’s, and later in life, every one of her grandkids’ activities. She could always be found on the 50 yard line or the front row at every event. It didn’t matter the miles or her health, she was always there to cheer them on.

Janie is preceded in death by her grandparents Goldie and Adolf Kilian, Anna and Henry Goertz, her parents, her brother Philip, and her granddaughter Zoie.

Janie leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Roger Goertz and wife Natalie Goertz (The Woodlands, TX), Rodney Goertz and fiancé Pauletta Dodgen (Anthony, KS). Her children Charlotte Neumeyer and husband Scott Neumeyer (Wylie, TX), Jay Gates and wife Maria Gates (Anthony, KS).
