Many papers have been published in Anthony, Kansas, and many have failed except for the Anthony Republican. The Anthony Republican has been in publication for over 140 years.
Anthony’s first newspaper rolled off the primitive press on August 22, 1878. Founded by J.S. Soule, the early edition was formulated with hand set type and a hand cranked press. Over 100 years later-through progress of the newspaper and the community-the Republican advanced into modern offset printing-computerized typesetting and high-speed presses.
It has been said that “it takes a good newspaper to make a good community.” The reverse is also true, for it takes a good community to make a good newspaper. The two are inter-dependent, and each is of vital importance to the other.
Anthony’s newspaper will continue to “keep faith” with the community we have served for the past 135 years. The heritage of the years is also an obligation-one which makes us desire, whole handily and sincerely, to move forward with the community to even greater civic accomplishments in the future then in the past.
