Shayne G. Hayes

Shayne Gregory Hayes, 61, of Attica, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Shayne was born July 15, 1965 to Bryce Hayes and Barbara O’Grady. He was the youngest of four children and was raised in Attica, where he attended Attica Public Schools and graduated in 1983.  Following graduation, Shayne continued working in the family business, Hayes Oil & Gas, while attending Kansas Newman University, where he pursued studies in Business and English.  

Shayne was a kind, compassionate, and genuinely caring person who never met a stranger.  He had an easygoing and humorous personality that drew people to him, and he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.  Those who knew Shayne often spoke about his ability to make people laugh and his willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.  

Shayne had an incredible thirst for knowledge and was affectionately known by friends and family as a “walking encyclopedia.” His knowledge seemed endless, but his passion for history was especially remarkable.  He could talk for hours about the people, places, and events that fascinated him, and he had an uncanny ability to remember the smallest details.  

Above all, Shayne treasured his family.  He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart.  Known affectionately as “Pop Pop,” he cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren: Ben, Tinlee, Baker, Brooks, Kennedy, Baron, Otto, Knuemann, and Knico.  His love, humor, stories, and larger -than-life personality will remain a part of their lives forever.  

Shayne had a lifelong love for dogs, and they were an important part of his life and his family.  He had a special place in his heart for his dogs and treated them as members of the family.  The dogs in his life were more than pets-they were companions, friends, and part of the family, and there was always room in Shayne’s heart for another one of Taner’s dogs.  

Shayne also found great joy in the outdoors.  He loved boating, camping, spending time outside, and enjoying life with his family and friends.  He had a special love for the simple pleasures that came from being outdoors and surrounded by the people he loved.  

Music was another important part of Shayne’s life.  His love of music and natural talent led him to play drums alongside friends who shared his passion.  Music brought him joy and gave him another way to connect with the people around him.

Shayne is survived by his wife, Lorie; his children, Megan (Daniel) Gubichuk, Vance (Charlie) Hayes, and Taner (Kelsey) Hayes; and his grandchildren: Ben, Tinlee, Baker, Brooks, Kennedy, Baron, Otto, Knuemann, and Knico.  

He is also survived by his mother, Barbara O’Grady; sisters: Sharon (Greg) Niemann, Sandra (Terry) Arnett, and Susan (Jim) LaPlant; stepmother, Carol Noller; and stepsiblings: Tamara (Lloyd) Davis, Bryant (Vanessa) Phye, Bill (Becky) Milner Jr., and Kelly (Darren) Guinn; and many other family members and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Bryce Hayes, and his stepfather, Bill Milner Sr.

Shayne leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, knowledge, music, adventure, and countless memories.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.  His easy smile, generous heart, unforgettable stories, and the love he had for his family will live on in those who loved him.

He will forever be loved and remembered as a husband, father, Pop Pop, brother, son and friend.  

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Harper, Kansas with Pastor Royce Vogt officiating.  Burial will follow in the Attica Cemetery.

Friends may register from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends, at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Harper.
